How Do You Update An LG TV?

There are actually two main ways that you can go about updating an LG smart TV. But don’t worry, both of these methods are very easy. Let’s start with the most recommended method to use!

The Automatic Method

The automatic method is incredibly easy, because it can be done entirely from the smart TV itself. You only need to make sure that you have a strong internet connection and an LG account.

The first step is to head to the settings menu, which can be found by pressing the dedicated button on the remote controller. From the settings menu, you’ll want to head to “All Settings”, and then the “Support” submenu.

You can easily update your LG TV by heading to the system menu. From the “Support” submenu, you’ll be able to search for the latest software updates. If there is one available, it will be automatically downloaded and installed!

On this submenu, look for the “Software Updates” button. Click this, and then select “Check For Updates” on the next screen. From here, your LG TV will automatically search the web for any software updates available. If there are any updates available, you’ll be given the option to download them. Simply click “Download And Install”.

Once the update has been downloaded, all you need to do is turn the TV off for 10 seconds. When you turn the TV back on, it will automatically install the update.

The Manual Method

If your LG TV is not currently connected to the internet, or you’re otherwise encountering trouble with the automatic method, don’t fret. You can also install the latest software version via more manual means. All you will need is an empty flash drive with more than 1GB of storage, and a computer that is connected to the internet.

Step 1 – Find Your TV

The first thing you’ll need to do is find the appropriate update file for your unique TV model. To do this, you’ll want to boot up your computer and head to the “Software And Drivers” page on the LG website.

On this page, you’ll be able to search through a number of LG TV models. Scroll through the options to find your TV model. You can also use the handy search bar to type in your TV’s model number. Make sure to type in the full model number that should be printed on a sticker on the back of your TV.

Step 2 – Download The Update File

Once you’ve found your TV model, simply click on it, and you will be given the option to download the latest update file. Before you initiate the download, you’ll first need to insert your USB drive into the computer.

Within the USB drive, make a new folder with the name “LG_DTV”. This is important because it will ensure the TV recognises what to run once it is booted up later.

Now, download the update file from the LG website. Once it’s downloaded, find the file on your computer’s storage. It will be stored as a zip file initially. You’ll need to right-click on it, and select “Extract All”. Ensure that the extracted files are sent to the “LG_DTV” file you made earlier on the USB drive.

Once the files have been extracted to the USB, simply eject it, and bring it over to your TV.

Step 3 – Install The Update

Now, find one of the USB ports on your LG TV. As soon as you insert the USB into position, the TV should activate, and you should see “USB UPDATE READY” on the screen. Grab your remote control, and select the “Install” button.

From there, all you need to do is follow any on-screen instructions. Keep in mind that the update may take up to 5 minutes to finish!

If you’re having trouble installing the automatic update to your LG TV, don’t worry. You can still perform the update manually by downloading the update from the LG website and loading it onto a USB drive.

Once it’s done, simply unplug the USB drive, and turn off the TV for ten seconds. When booted back up, the TV will install its update.

If your TV does not activate as soon as you insert the USB drive, you will need to check that you have correctly named the update file. It must be written exactly as above, as this is the file name that the TV will exclusively look for!
